Save the Whales, Eat the Twinkies

maya-whalesMy sweet niece Maya shares my love of baking and edible crafts. We decided to spend an afternoon making cupcakes, so we looked through Karen Tack and Alan Richardson’s books on baking for a recipe. We chose Whale of a Good Time from What’s New, Cupcake — which turned out great, and much easier to make than it might look.

I love Tack and Richardson’s books, which also include Hello Cupcake and Cupcakes, Cookies & Pie, Oh My! — and yes, I own all of them. Many of their recipes don’t require special decorating tools, so they’re great for kids or impatient adults like me. But there are more challenging recipes if you have the skill or ambition. One of these days I’ll tackle Starry Night — a cupcake rendition of Van Gogh’s painting. Although I think those results might end up on a craft fail site.
